Ultracold atoms in quasiperiodic optical potentials.

Lead Research Organisation: University of Cambridge
Department Name: Physics

Abstract

Ultracold atoms in optical lattices have emerged in the last years as versatile and powerful quantum simulators to study the physics of strongly interacting many-body systems in and out of equilibrium. In this project we will extend this framework to Optical Quasicrystals, that is aperiodic, but long-range ordered, optical potentials. Quasicrystals offer unique and complex many-body physics leading to, for example, highly unusual transport properties. This has led to the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2011. In this project, we will load degenerate quantum gases into these potentials and study their out-of-equilibrium dynamics and transport properties.
