Particle Theory

Abstract

Already now, the experiments at the Large Hadron Collider are performing measurements with a remarkable precision, hereby trying to unravel the fundamental questions of nature, e.g. what is the origin of mass or what is the basic underlying theory to describe nature. However, if the experiments are measuring new physics or processes exclusively induced by Standard Model particles can only be inferred after comparing the measurements with precise theoretical predictions for the respective final states. For theoretical predictions to match the match the high precision of the measurements theoretical calculations higher-order corrections have to be included. The aim of this theoretical project is to perform and improve on techniques for higher-order calculations. The ambitious project will entail complex analytical computations using state of the art mathematical techniques and will resort on numerical study with the aid of computer simulations. The Institute for Particle Physics Phenomenology (IPPP) in Durham is renowned to be one of the centers for higher-order calculations and is therefore an ideal place for this project.
