Development of an autonomous accelerated reaction evaluation platform

Abstract

There is a pressing need to develop green, sustainable, economically viable and environmentally friendly technology for biomass conversion into chemicals or biofuels. However, the catalytic reactions required are significantly different from the petroleum refining reactions and will necessitate the identification of new engineering and catalytic strategies. For this purpose, reliable reaction kinetic models are crucial. The traditional approach requires several sets of experiments, which, if poorly designed, may be a waste of time and laboratory resources. Compared to the conventional systems, autonomous flow microreactors combined with online analysis methods are a powerful tool for rapid kinetics identification. This research project aims to design an autonomous reactor system with online analysis, which will provide kinetic models for reactions of relevance to bio-derived fuels and chemicals. To attain this goal, reactor platforms that can be programmed to perform transient and steady-state experiments, predict the model structure and provide precise automated parameter estimation, will be developed.
