Transcribing Environmental Sound: The Acoustics of Post-industrial Space

Lead Research Organisation: Newcastle University
Department Name: Sch of English Lit, Lang & Linguistics

Abstract

I propose to write an innovative collection of audio-poetic works composed using field recordings of former industrial spaces and recorded voice. This practice-based research will explore an experimental three-stage creative process of listening, transcription and performance. Focusing on two poets - Alice Oswald and Zoë Skoulding - who explore environmental sound in their composition, writing and performance processes, my accompanying 30,000-word critical thesis will investigate poetic responses to and representations of the temporal nature of de-industrialised auditory environments.
