Abstract

This project is for a PhD named in ESRC Grant ES/S009841/1, "Improving Project delivery (Project X).
Sustainable growth in the UK economy depends significantly on major public projects and the Industrial Strategy identified "project delivery" as a necessary driver for economic productivity. The grant proposal was the response of the nine universities associated with the Infrastructure and Projects authority (IPA), (who oversee the Government Major Projects Portfolio). The overarching research aim is to deepen the academic and policymakers' understanding of the delivery of major governmental projects and programmes. We aim to address fundamental social science questions about the role of society in the achievement of informational change and long-term benefits under conditions of risk, uncertainty, and complexity. The study will conduct a body of high quality, strategic research on the delivery of major governmental projects; build research capacity; develop the resilience of our innovative "triple helix" mode;; generate significant policy and economic impacts and leave legacy data and governance procedures for future researchers. This specific PhD will cover 'data quality and use as performance drivers', on an agenda developed with the IPA.
