Abstract

Industrial control systems (ICS) are increasingly exposed to wider networks in an attempt to enhance their manageability and interoperability. These developments in conjunction with evolving cyber-threats reduce the barrier to exploitation of such systems while observed attacks show that air-gaps are of limited practical effectiveness in protecting critical infrastructure. Because security best practices such as updates are challenging to implement in the context of industrial control systems due to downtime and other concerns, novel anomaly detection techniques resilient to long-term manipulation, adversarial inputs and maliciously crafted readings need be developed to serve as intrusion detection elements in overarching security architectures.
