The development of personalised molecular therapeutics: A comparative ethnographic perspective on the use of genetic testing in ovarian cancer and col

Lead Research Organisation: University College London
Department Name: Anthropology

Abstract

The research project is examining the use of genetic testing and personalised medicine in the treatment of patients with advanced cancer. In the past genetic testing technologies have been primarily situated in the field of cancer prevention. Over recent years however, following advances made in the development and delivery of personalised molecular therapeutics in the practice of oncology, genetic testing technologies are being integrated into mainstream cancer care. This research project will be situated in an ovarian cancer and colorectal cancer clinic of a large tertiary NHS hospital. It will be grounded in the methods of clinical ethnography to engage with patients and healthcare professionals to explore the socio-cultural, political and ethical implications of genetic testing within the broader context of personalised medicine development.
