Active Colloidal Gels: Dynamically Arrested Active Matter

Lead Research Organisation: University of Bristol
Department Name: Physics

Abstract

This project would synthesise and study the behaviour of active colloidal gels. Because it
has for the most part been confined to quasi two-dimensional systems, the experimental
study of active colloids has yet to be extended to spinodal gels of active particles, which
form a bi-continuous network and are therefore three- dimensional. However, a threedimensional
active colloidal system has recently been realised in Bristol, which permits
the study into this novel phase of active matter. It is expected that experiments would be
run concurrently with simulations, in which the supervisory team have considerable
expertise.
