Graphene based wireless sensor network for infrastructure monitoring

Lead Research Organisation: Newcastle University
Department Name: Sch of Engineering

Abstract

This multidisciplinary research project proposes the development of a state of the art, low cost and easy to install graphene-based wireless sensor network for Structural Health Monitoring. The system will be based on a novel printed graphene strain sensor that will allow unprecedented accuracy in determining structural deformations for a wide spectrum of strains, previously not achievable with classical strain sensors. The sensor will use commercial low-power wireless electronics for data acquisition and communications. Structural health parameters like strain, vibration and temperature will be uploaded to a server database for structural health monitoring and development of digital twins. The wireless sensor network will be deployed out in laboratory test structures at the University of Leeds and outdoors at a specific site in County Durham.
