In-service degradation in Gas Turbines

Lead Research Organisation: University of Cambridge
Department Name: Engineering

Abstract

This project is concerned with the modelling of in-service degradation in gas turbines. The research will focus on the implementation of erosion, deposition and hot corrosion models in multi-physics Computational Fluid Dynamics & FEA simulations combined with geometry modelling & management. This will provide insight in to the key physical mechanisms and 3D flow structures controlling degradation in a modern gas turbine. The ultimate aim of this project is to use this information & new knowledge to enable an improved estimation of gas turbine life and suggest possible life extending design modifications which could be made to mitigate & manage degradation.
