Longitudinal analysis of the effects of lifelong physical activity on muscle and immune ageing

Lead Research Organisation: University of Birmingham
Department Name: Institute of Inflammation and Ageing

Abstract

We previously undertook a cross sectional study to determine the effects of ageing and inactivity on immune function. However, cross sectional studies have an inherent limitation; thus this PhD studentship will resample this cohort of cyclists (8 years since initial investigation) and compare the trajectory of muscle and immune ageing with a sedentary cohort that had also been originally sampled in 2012. Secondly, this PhD studentship will also determine potential mechanisms involved in any improved trajectory.
