Abstract

The project looks into the use of Augmented Reality to assist in the visualisation of concepts in mathematics.
Interaction modes in Mathematics

The overarching goal of my research is to determine whether AR is a suitable platform for education. The main goal of this project however, is to assess if it is possible to pick coinciding modes of interaction in mathematics and AR technology, and see if it is able to significantly improve a students' learning ability whilst reducing their cognitive load. The method for executing this involves selecting a module - which has a specific optimal mode of interaction - and developing 3 AR programs and one non-AR program. With the programs, we would commence experiments in test groups and would collect data through user-centred feedback (such as surveys) from the 4 control groups.

My motivation for pursuing research in this area is due to my interest Human-Computer Interaction as well as having a strong desire to assist others in developing themselves. I wish to chip away at the barrier to entry to academic research for the general layman, and I believe that researching into this area, will help with creating a more dynamic way of learning, as well as possibly creating guidelines and boundaries for augmented classrooms. I believe that this research could have possible applications not just in education, but also in game design and user interface development.
