Spoiler Aerodynamics and Aeroacoustics

Lead Research Organisation: University of Southampton
Department Name: Sch of Engineering

Abstract

A PhD studentship is now available in the area of aerodynamics and aeroacoustics of spoilers. The studentship provides a unique opportunity to work on a relevant engineering problem. The studentship is provided by the Airbus Noise Technology Centre (ANTC). The unsteady aerodynamic flow field around a deployed spoiler leads to noise radiation to the ground causing environment problems. This noise source is not well understood. This PhD studentship will involve generating experimental data in the new Anechoic Wind Tunnel at the University of Southampton and numerical simulations. The outcome of the project will be a more fundamental understanding of the underlying mechanisms behind spoiler aerodynamics and aeroacoustics. The PhD studentship will provide a good opportunity to work with one of the largest aerospace companies in the world, and explore relevant problems in the aerospace industry.

The Airbus Noise Technology Centre (http://www.southampton.ac.uk/antc/) was opened in November 2008 at the University of Southampton. It is the result of the long standing collaboration between Airbus and the University on a range of noise research and development projects. The centre brings together academic staff, research fellows and PhD students using state-of-the-art computer simulations and wind tunnel testing to develop new noise reduction concepts.
