Abstract
Scotland's fishing industry is increasingly dependent on migrant labour, with almost 1/3 of fishers on Scottish vessels coming from outside the UK. The shift towards migrant labour has occurred over just 18 years and there have been reports of poor working conditions, unequal pay and forced labour, however, there is, to date, no systematic analyses of international labour dynamics in the fishing sector. This PhD (with Marine Scotland) aims to fill this gap exploring the legal, economic and social relationships between migrant crew, the wider fisheries industry and coastal communities. This will make an important global contribution to fisheries/environmental policy given the popularity of market-based management for environmental governance.
