The development of bioactives to combat neurodegenerative disease

Lead Research Organisation: University of Southampton
Department Name: Sch of Chemistry

Abstract

This project deals with the synthesis of fluorinated bioactive compounds, as well as investigating how fluorination modifies a number of physical properties. Following earlier results in which a number of active compounds had been identified against neurodegenerative disease, this project will on the one hand develop more efficient syntheses for the compound leads involved, as well as develop further analogues. Given for the types of compounds synthesised, the influence of fluorination will be felt in modified hydrogen bond properties, a number of model compounds will be synthesised in which particular effects can be studied in isolation. Finally, the influence of fluorination on the lipophilicity of the synthesised analogues will also be studied
