Studying the properties of ttbar events containing extra boson with the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider

Lead Research Organisation: University of Glasgow
Department Name: College of Science and Engineering

Abstract

This studentship focuses on measuring top quark properties, such as spin correlation, in recently-observed top pair (tt) states with either an additional Z, photon, or Higgs boson, in order to probe the couplings between these bosons and the top quark. Understanding the interaction between the Higgs boson and the top is of crucial importance for our understanding of how mass is generated and probing the interactions between the top quark and the Z/photon allows us to probe the interplay between Quantum Chromo Dynamics (QCD) and Electro Weak (EW) physics at nature's highest scales.

Initially, the focus will be on measuring spin correlation in ttZ and ttGamma events using the full Run2 dataset collected by the ATLAS detector. Future work will then prepare to make similar measurements during Run3 in ttH events, where statistics will be more favourable.

All of these measurements will be powerful tools for searching for, or in the absence of signal constraining, physics Beyond Standard Model (BSM).
