RESIDUAL STRESS IN CASTING CYLINDER HEAD
Lead Research Organisation:
Brunel University London
Department Name: Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Abstract
The utilisation of lightweight aluminium alloys to manufacture engine components has increased rapidly over the past 30 years. It has been very attractive for the automotive industry where strong and lightweight structures for IC (internal combustion) lead to improved performance due to decreased overall weight of vehicles. The improvement of these IC engines has been imperative to the growth and movement of automotive manufacturing. Examples of previous improvements include computer control systems, increased compression ratios and the step up in efficiency garnered by the use of an optimisation catalyst.
