Lead Research Organisation: University of Manchester
Department Name: Alliance Manchester Business School

Abstract

The PhD research topic aim to explore and develop a model to present the main factors that inhibit the adoption (or rejection) of AI technology, such as smart homes, by elderly people. The project is supported by the industrial partner BT. The second phase of the project will look to address how a company can better present the technology so that the key operation and principles driving the behaviour of the technology are transparent to the intended population. The research will take a grounded theory approach to generate a model of the factors impacting uptake of AI. The methodology used will first include topic modelling to triangulate the existing theories within relevant literature and public opinion on social media. Next the model will be validated through the combination of questionnaire survey, industrial trials and analysis of secondary data.
