Abstract

Bacteriophage (phage) biology is currently enjoying a renaissance owing to the widespread use of CRISPR-cas systems for genome editing and the discovery of novel phage-resistance systems such as BacteRiophage EXclusion (BREX). This project aims to study the structure and function of the key BREX methyltransferase, PglX, to harness this as a new lab tool, and will develop skills in a range of techniques including microbiology, molecular biology, protein biochemistry, X-ray crystallography and cryo-electron microscopy.
