Abstract
My proposed PhD thesis would involve looking at the relationship between sleep and productivity using three different methods. The first chapter would look to establish if there is a causal relationship between sleep and productivity using Mendelian Randomization with genotypes that are associated with sleep. The second chapter would look to exploit a natural experiment, such as the brief shock to sleeping patterns caused by the advancing of the clock by one hour in the summer due to daylight saving time. The third chapter would look to make use of time-use data to look at the relationship between sleep and productivity, though this estimate would not be causal, it would make use of a highly useful resource that would have accurate measurements of sleep duration and daytime activities.
