Bioorganic Nanodevices

Lead Research Organisation: University of Edinburgh
Department Name: Sch of Chemistry

Abstract

This project will explore the coupling of synthetic organic chemistry and biomolecules to develop hybrid synthetic/biological molecular machines. DNA and transmembrane proteins, and lipid membranes will provide the biological sources, while organic switches and molecular rotors will provide the organic parts. The operation of the systems will be interrogated using gel electrophoresis and transmembrane ion currents down to the single-molecule level. The work is relevant to both the "Emergence and Physics Far From Equilibrium" and "Understanding the Physics of Life" EPSRC Grant challenges (i.e. molecular machines and biophysics/bionanotechnology
