Fluctuation driven ordering phenomena in Kondo materials

Lead Research Organisation: University College London
Department Name: London Centre for Nanotechnology

Abstract

Quantum fluctuations can lead to exotic ordering phenomena in metals with strong interactions between electrons. Such fluctuations become particularly strong in the vicinity of quantum phase transitions at absolute zero temperature. In the vicinity of such quantum critical points various novel phases of matter are found, such as unconventional superconductivity and exotic magnetic states. The behaviour is even richer in Kondo lattice systems which exhibit local magnetic moments that are interacting with the conduction electrons. The aim of the research project is to theoretically analyse exotic ordering phenomena in such materials, using techniques from many-body field theory, such as perturbative diagrammatic calculations and the renormalisation group. The aim is to understand the underlying fluctuation-driven ordering mechanisms at a fundamental level. This knowledge might feed into technological applications in the long term.
