Mixed-dimensional material integration for electronic and photonic neuromorphic computing

Abstract

This project aims to develop novel, energy-efficient neuromorphic systems based on mixed dimensionality (2D-3D) heterostructures where two-dimensional layered materials (2DLM) are combined with three-dimensional integrated oxide-based electronics and photonics platforms, particularly CMOS and silicon photonics. Such mixed-dimensionality system will have optical input and output, while the functional units, i.e. synapses and neurons, will consist of 2DLM stacks capable of either converting and processing the optical signal into an electrical one or manipulating the optical signal directly. The final goal of the project is to demonstrate a working prototype of a neuromorphic electronic-photonic systems, based on either ANNs or spiking neuronal networks (SNNs), capable of performing common machine learning tasks, such as pattern recognition and classification.
