Developing a new self-harm assessment tool for autistic adults with and without mild intellectual disability.

Lead Research Organisation: University of Nottingham
Department Name: Sch of Psychology

Abstract

Self-harm has traditionally been defined very differently in autistic people compared with the general population. As a consequence, self-harm in autism has been overlooked by researchers and clinicians, even though research suggests that autistic adults are at an increased risk of experiencing self-harm compared to non-autistic adults. Despite this, there is a lack of research exploring self-harm in autism, and the research that does exist lacks the inclusion of autistic people with co-occurring intellectual disability.
