User Centred Design Approach to Designing and Evaluating Fair Unbiased AI-Driven Models in Socio-Technical Decision Support Systems.

Lead Research Organisation: Swansea University
Department Name: College of Science

Abstract

This project examines how Artificial Intelligence technology design can evolve to ensure fair decision support in socio-technical systems, specifically free from bias.
This project will adopt a mixed methods approach to reducing the potential for harm caused. It will engage stakeholders in a user-centred design process establishing a workable definition and acceptance criteria for adoption of a non-bias algorithm. Through focus groups, prototyping and testing users will debate and design the effectiveness of the removal of bias from AI algorithms.
This imperial work will add to the discourse on further integration of social science theories such as egalitarian fairness and individual justice in the formalisation of individual and group fairness in AIdriven socio-technical decision making systems.
The work will adopt principles of responsible research and innovation (RRI), the candidate will undertake a training course with Orbit on foundational elements of RRI including an introduction to the AREA Framework
