The hunt for Quasicrystals in core-shell colloidal systems

Abstract
A Metropolitan monte carlo simulation was used to search for icosahedral quasicrystal formation amongst core-shell colloidal systems, modelled as having a linear ramp shoulder potential, as opposed to the more commonly used square shoulder potential. It was found that quasicrystals with strong 12-fold symmetry formed under a stationary quenching procedure. Simulations of the colloids under compression and dilation showed prospects for quasicrystal formation, yet equilibration time is much longer.
