Investigating the role of SARM1 in Wallerian Degeneration

Lead Research Organisation: University of Cambridge
Department Name: Clinical Neurosciences

Abstract

Wallerian degeneration was discovered in axon injury, but has been shown to be involved in many neurodegenerative
diseases. When active, the NADase SARM1 is a key executioner of the Wallerian degeneration (WD) pathway in
neurons. The Coleman group has characterised several activators of SARM1 that differ in potency. This research project
will study the molecular basis of these differences using both cell-free systems and neuronal culture, as part of a longerterm
aim to block activation and preserve axons in disease.
