In Vivo Verification of Proton Therapy: Derivation of Delivered Radiation Dose via Prompt Gamma Imaging.

Lead Research Organisation: UNIVERSITY OF READING
Department Name: Mathematics and Statistics

Abstract

Conventional radiation therapy uses high energy beams of radiation to destroy cancerous cells. These beams are not local and can affect the surrounding tissue. Common side-effects of this include nausea and sometimes disruption to organ function. Proton therapy is an alternative treatment that uses proton beams that are better able to locally target specific areas. As a treatment, they do not affect the patient in the same way, with little to no noticeable side-effects.
