Abstract
UKAEA is commissioning the £50M CHIMERA facility at Rotherham for hydraulic and electromagnetic tests on prototype components under the conditions experienced inside fusion reactors. It will be important to produce digital twins of components in order, for example, to conduct parametric design and uncertainty quantification studies. The construction and validation of digital twins, especially where classical fluid turbulence may be significant, should be eased by dedicated access to a set of controlled table-top-scale experiments. CHIMERA will include smaller complementary facilities providing rapid, agile support to the main facility, which will be able to accommodate these 'Smallab' experiments from Autumn 2021.
