Characterisation of Lithium Ion Battery cells using EIS techniques

Lead Research Organisation: Newcastle University
Department Name: Sch of Engineering

Abstract

The project will require EIS correlation with the following:-

1) Time domain electrical performance process data of cells in the normal population and those rejected at the final stage of manufacturing that exhibit surface imperfections

2) Durability life cycle performance of cells in the upper and lower quartiles of the distribution.

NU & NMUK were involved in APC project HEDB (2016-1018) within which they collaborated to install a prototype test station which makes automated Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) measurements on samples of product or can be used in manual configuration to make the same measurements with manual feed. These measurements do not currently form any part of the automated QA process on the production line. It is expected this measurement technique could be integrated into future production facilities to augment the data gathered.
