'Understanding Organized Cognition'

Lead Research Organisation: University of Cambridge
Department Name: MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit

Abstract

The goal of understanding how organized cognition emerges from the combination of diffuse neural activations remains one of the final frontiers within neuroscience. Intelligent behaviour has often been reconciled under the premise that complex goals and routines are accomplished through the completion of a series of more simple increments/subroutines. Moreover, it is widely held that the multiple demand system, a group of regions within the prefrontal cortex, anterior insula, and intraparietal sulcus, operates to flexibly combine these cognitive subroutines into a target behaviour. As a result, I seek to better understand the multiple demand system in order to better elucidate its role in cognitive control.
