Jet ignition hybrid powertrain for future ultra low emission passenger cars

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to develop new in-house simulation tools that enable in-depth thermodynamic analysis of novel jet ignition engine combustion and optimise the fuelling strategies associated with this technology. Turbulent jet ignition has the potential to offer near-zero pollutant emissions and improved fuel economy in future hybrid passenger cars. It has recently attracted interest by automotive manufacturers and it is one of the core topics within the engines
group at the University of Nottingham.
The work to be completed during this PhD programme involves single cylinder testing, thermodynamic analysis and simulation of hybrid powertrains, as well as the investigation of alternative fuels and novel e-machine architectures realised through additive manufacturing. The work will be under the guidance of the FLUTE (Fluids and Thermal Engineering) and PEMC (Power Electronics, Machines
and Control) research groups and the programme will be supported with a research engine by MAHLE Powertrain, a global leader in jet ignition.
