Still Learning to Labour - exploring the dynamics of the construction classroom

Lead Research Organisation: University of Sussex
Department Name: Sch of Education and Social Work

Abstract

This research explores the dynamics of the construction classroom in the departments of
three Further Education colleges in England. The majority of students in Further Education
study courses preparing them for the workplace, highlighting the traditionally working-class
nature of the setting. Many of their teachers will have also left school at 16, progressing
through the apprenticeship system to go on to become experts in their field. Taking a case
study approach, using mixed methods including observations, focus groups and interviews,
the research aims to give a deeper understanding of how the prior educational experiences
and lived experience of the students and teachers in the construction classroom shapes their
interactions. This study, conducted in an important but under-researched setting, will add
new knowledge that can be used to support the development of policies and strategies
addressing the challenges and opportunities the construction classroom presents.
