High Fidelity Virtual Face-to-Face Production Engineering Meetings

Lead Research Organisation: University of Warwick
Department Name: WMG

Abstract

This PhD will investigate novel methods of capturing, transmitting, and delivering high quality, multisensory, 3D data between remote locations. In particular, the research will consider and advance the state-of-the-art in real-time connectivity and authenticity associated with virtual attendees. This will include accurately matching the lighting and audio from a venue, life-like actions and interactions between the real and virtual participants, and accurate real-time tracking to enable natural movement and gesturing.

Research question: How can immersion in virtual reality help a user better undertake complex production engineering management and process decisions remotely?

To answer this question, this PhD will research a number of key areas of virtual reality technology, including:
What are the use case requirements for capture and delivery in the manufacturing process?
How multiple stakeholders and equipment can be captured fully in 3D so that they can be viewed from all directions for effective working conditions?
How the multisensory aspects of real activities can be effectively and realistically transferred to the virtual activities?
