Time-dependent ultraviolet degradation of marine neustonic plastics

Lead Research Organisation: University of Hull
Department Name: Energy and Environment Institute

Abstract

Description: Our aim is to categorize the degradation effects of the marine environment on types of plastics known to be prevalent as waste in the environment. Can a plastic's degradation profiles be linked with Ultraviolet radiation dose? Can we quantify the effect of wavelength on plastics degradation through the development of 'Action spectra'? Do these action spectra differ between plastics? Can laboratory weathering of plastics be linked to the observed environmental weathering?
