Women's experiences of workplace behaviours following miscarriage

Lead Research Organisation: The Open University
Department Name: Faculty of Wellbg, Educ & Lang Sci(WELS)

Abstract

The current research presents miscarriage as a crucial issue for the world of work. Approximately one in five pregnancies end in miscarriage (Guardian, 2015). Severe pain, depression and anxiety are reported effects, clearly making work extremely challenging, if not impossible (Evans, 2012; Hazen, 2003; Katz, 2012; Porschitz & Siler, 2017). However, despite its prevalence and impact, miscarriage is shrouded in social stigma - resulting in disenfranchised grief (unacknowledged grief leading to isolation) (Hazen, 2003; Layne, 1997; Porschitz & Siler, 2017).
