Energy Harvesting for electronic tracers
Lead Research Organisation:
CRANFIELD UNIVERSITY
Department Name: School of Water, Energy and Environment
Abstract
In this project the sponsored PhD, supported by the Cranfield research team, will develop a small form factor energy harvester to power LED in tracer ammunition. The energy harvester will be able to integrate into all calibres including small and medium calibre ammunition (e.g. 5.56mm to 40mm). It can operate in harsh environments, and has a viable development pathway to low cost/high volume manufacture. It enables the use of electronic technology in munitions to offer greater capabilities, smaller form factors and lower costs than the technologies currently employed. This research is targeting the tracer application, but the energy harvesting technologies developed in the project will find further applications in other munitions subsystems where electronic technologies may be used.
