Numerical simulations of hot neutron stars

Abstract
Neutron star mergers have been observed through gravitational waves and electromagnetism. Accurate modelling of these events needs numerical simulations describing the hot merged object in full general relativity. These numerical simulations are expensive, and the theory of heat in relativity is complex and problematic. Using techniques developed at Southampton for magnetized neutron star mergers, this project will develop numerical methods and tools for including more realistic theories of heat flow in neutron star merger simulations.
