Getting to grip with artificial turf

Investigation into the traction behaviour of artificial turf surfaces; investigating the generation of traction forces and the mechanisms governing the production of resistive forces during an interaction between studded boots and artificial surfaces.

Currently there is little understanding of the detailed mechanics of the boot-surface mechanics. The PhD programme aims to develop new hypotheses and understanding supported by detailed and novel experimental evidence. The initial stages of traction resistance generation over small stud displacements is of particular interest, and to explore the influence of many of the artificial surface characteristics including the carpet fibres and different infill materials.

In the initial programme of work, a bespoke prototype automated traction rig is to be constructed to permit exploration of the interaction mechanisms, and facilitating a novel method of optical tracking of the displacing stud and surface (fibre and infill) response.

A commercial specialist sport surface testing house is supporting the work, with a focus on supporting the development of novel test methods to enhance industry future best practice.
