Mathematical problems in general relativity
Lead Research Organisation:
Imperial College London
Department Name: Dept of Mathematics
Abstract
The project concerns certain problems in Einstein's general theory of relativity. The theory is governed by a nonlinear system of hyperbolic partial differential equations known as the Einstein equations. Great progress is currently being made on the study of solutions of these equations in neighbourhoods of certain explicit stationary solutions, most notably the celebrated Kerr family of black holes. The aim of the project is to adapt techniques in nonlinear partial differential equations, developed over recent years, to address problems related to the stability problem of the Kerr family. The project falls under the EPSRC strategic theme of mathematical sciences, and the research areas of mathematical analysis, mathematical physics, and nonlinear systems.
