Abstract
Based on 24 months of ethnographic fieldwork among fishing communities in North Jakarta, this thesis interrogates what it means to live and work in a historically neglected and currently much-contested urban sea ecology. Over the last two decades, North Jakarta has become the target of large-scale infrastructure developments and land reclamation projects which are increasingly pushing fishing communities into a space of uninhabitability. In this physical and legal space, I explore how new opportunities, forms of social organisation, and notions of value emerge allowing urban fishers, their family and community to navigate city life.
