Galaxy interactions in groups and clusters behind the Magellanic Clouds
Lead Research Organisation:
Keele University
Department Name: Faculty of Natural Sciences
Abstract
This research project aims to, first, identify groups and clusters of galaxies behind the Magellanic Clouds and, then, characterise galaxy interactions and their effects on the galaxies' morphology, star formation rate and nuclear activity as a function of environment and redshift. Two main types of interaction will form part of this assessment: galaxy-galaxy and galaxy-ICM (Intra-Cluster Medium). The analysis will be based on recently completed multi-wavelength imaging surveys and associated source catalogues, and the application of automated and/or machine learning algorithms. Followup observational programmes will be designed in order to test methodologies and gain detailed insight.
