Application of Deep Learning to understand neurodegenerative diseases using clinical optical imaging

Lead Research Organisation: Heriot-Watt University
Department Name: Sch of Engineering and Physical Science

Abstract

This is a PhD research project in the investigation of deep learning techniques using fluorescence-based single-molecule and super-resolution images to understand neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. The project will be focused on the accumulation of amyloid deposits in the brain (a-synuclein for Parkinson's disease), which are created by a process of misfolding and aggregation of soluble proteins into insoluble deposits/aggregates. To access this information, we will investigate its presence in human cerebrospinal fluid (SFC).

The project proposal will be in line with the EPSRC-funded "Proteus" interdisciplinary research collaboration (see: proteus.ac.uk) - a collaboration involving Heriot-Watt University, and the Universities of Edinburgh, working with Dr Matthew Horrocks (UoE, school of chemistry) http://www.horrockslab.org/.
