GNSS Reflectometry Data Fusion for Environmental Variable Retrieval

Abstract

GNSS Reflectometry is a novel passive sensing Earth Observation (EO) technique using the reflections of GNSS signals from the Earth to infer properties of the reflecting surface. Current published work has used GNSS R for observing soil moisture, ice extent, ocean roughness, ocean wind speed and more. Generally, GNSS R provides coarser spatial resolution than traditional EO techniques, but by virtue of satellites being placed in Low Earth Orbits (LEO) the data gives a much finer temporal resolution with a minimum revisit times of a few hours.

By combining GNSS R data with traditional EO sources via a Neural Network (NN) based data fusion process, this excellent temporal resolution can be maintained while mitigating the lack of spatial resolution. My project aims to develop these GNSS R data fusion techniques for environmental variable retrievals, in order to improve EO monitoring of the effects of climate change
