Polymorph stabilities of pharmaceuticals used in the treatment of COVID-19

Lead Research Organisation: University of Edinburgh
Department Name: Sch of Chemistry

Abstract

The aim of the project is to determine the pressure-sensitivity of COVID-19 related anti-viral active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). New polymorphs realised by high-pressure may i) have improved therapeutic properties or ii) identify potential limitations of the marketed form. New polymorphs and co-crystals will be characterized in-situ at high pressures using single-crystal and/or powder X-ray diffraction on beamline P02.2 at PETRA III and by other in-situ techniques such as Raman spectroscopy. Phase evolution of selected APIs will also be investigated on decompression which will help identify high-pressure phases that can be recovered at ambient conditions.
