EPItaxial growth and in-situ analysis of 2 dimensional SEMiconductors

Lead Research Organisation: University of Nottingham
Department Name: Sch of Physics & Astronomy

Abstract

The miniaturization of materials in the 21st century has enabled important discoveries and access to a wide range of phenomena of fundamental and applied interest. But future progress and innovative solutions to global challenges require a shift towards transformative material systems and integration technologies. This PhD project will contribute to establish a facility (EPI2SEM) for the EPItaxial growth and in-situ analysis of a new generation of 2-dimensional SEMiconductors based on metal chalcogenides with fully-characterised electronic, chemical and morphological properties. This will enable innovation in quantum science and technology, and will promote strategic partnerships in the UK and abroad.

The PhD student will work with a team of 5 academics (P.H. Beton, A. Khlobystov, S. Novikov, A. Patanè, J. O'Shea) with a track-record of ground-breaking research in condensed matter physics and nanoscience. He will be supervised by Prof. A. Patanè (School of Physics and Astronomy) and Prof. A. Khlobystov (School of Chemistry).
