Abstract

Travel is responsible for about 40% of greenhouse gas emissions in the UK, and profound changes are needed in the sector for it to
make a contribution to climate change mitigation (CCC, 2019). While technology can play a role in reducing emissions, e.g., through
electric vehicles, ambitious climate targets can only be met with widespread behavioural changes to more active modes of transport,
such as walking and cycling. Active travel has many additional (co-)benefits. It is a comparatively easy way to integrate exercise into
daily life - with even short distances of regular active travel having major health benefits (Shephard, 2008); and can also help improve
local environment quality through reductions in air pollution and traffic congestion (Healy, 2017; Campbell-Lendrum & Pruss-Ustun,
2019).
