SERS based environmental monitoring for airborne and aqueous pollutants

Abstract
Analytes can be trapped within the plasmonically-active nanogaps of gold nanoparticle monolayers and produce very strong surface enhanced Raman (SERS) signals due to enhanced optical fields in the gaps. Trace amounts of molecules can be detected and identified, with detection limits often in the single molecule regime. This project aims to develop this sensing technique for qualitative and quantitative continuous environmental monitoring to test for harmful airborne and aqueous pollutants.
