Dynamics of extreme-mass-ratio inspirals in nonlinear perturbation theory

Lead Research Organisation: University of Southampton
Department Name: Sch of Mathematical Sciences

Abstract

Description: Extreme-mass-ratio inspirals will be key sources for space-based gravitational-wave detectors. Accurately modelling these systems requires working at nonlinear orders in perturbation theory. This project will develop practical tools for modelling this nonlinear dynamics, including the development of two-timescale approximation schemes and a formulation of the conservative sector of the dynamics.
