Effectiveness of NHS psychological treatments for individuals with a diagnosis of Complex Trauma

Lead Research Organisation: Queen Mary University of London

Abstract

Complex PTSD (cPTSD) is a newly-identified disorder linked
to adverse childhood experiences. The difficulties displayed
within cPTSD are also displayed in individuals with
borderline personality disorder (BPD); these similarities
have raised questions as to whether they are two separate
disorders. We intend to gather information on patients'
outcomes from both therapeutic communities (TCs) and a
dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) service. With this
information we plan to distinguish between the two
disorders and uncover if people with cPTSD respond
differently to those with BPD within these services.
Additionally, patients will be interviewed with the purpose
of discovering how patients interpret the different
diagnoses of cPTSD and BPD, including any stigma
associated with the labels.
